Meet your Coach,

Why I’m a Vegan Cat Lady

Non-human animals have always had a special place in my heart. For most of my life, I have had the privilege of sharing a house with cats, and I am currently guardian to four. I also hold a reverence for Mother Nature and remained deeply concerned about the myriad ways humans are destroying her and her inhabitants. In 1989, I became vegetarian and finally became vegan in 2011, once I learned about the dairy and egg industries.

It’s always been about service.

I began my career in education with Teach For America as a 3rd grade bilingual in Washington Heights, NYC. My fascination with languages and language learning called me to specialize in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I help immigrants acquire the language skills needed to succeed in the US. In this field, I worked as both a middle school ESOL teacher and as a program administrator in Adult Basic Education until 2017.

But, my Veganism reminded me that I’m not just about humans.  So, in 2017, after some intensive coaching, I gathered my courage and left my full-time job in education. This leap landed me at a farmed animal sanctuary and The Last Pig. Following my passion, talent, and empathetic nature led me to create the perfect role for me. As a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC), I get to help animals by supporting the humans who serve them!

How we navigate the world matters.

It can be easy to feel insignificant. But, I believe simple choices give us a feeling of agency.  So, I employ Zoe Weil’s principle of doing the Most Good and the Least Harm. This belief and practice calls me to think about how my choices affect others. So, it informs how I eat, shop, and interact with others. It’s an evolving journey that requires me to change my beliefs and actions as I continuously learn more about our interconnectedness on this planet.

Being a positive influence also requires me to do my own work (“Coach–Heal Thyself!”) and to consider how my energy, actions, and words affect others around me.  Like all of us, I’m definitely a work in progress!

Spirituality?  Really?

You can’t be Vegan and Spiritual!  At least that’s what I thought.  Most of my life, I had been a proud atheist, certain that there was no higher power–because how could there be so much suffering in the world if there were? However, in my longing for greater connection, compassion, love, service, gratitude, and freedom, I have surrendered (mostly!) to the notion that there are forces at work beyond what I can see and understand. Because I love the Earth, my spiritually centers around Nature. Leaning into Mother Earth helps me trust the journey we are all on–and that change is inevitable!
